Types of Double Shower Heads + How They Work

There are two main types of dual shower heads to choose from: the fixed dual head and the dual head with handheld attachment. Each one provides added comfort and multiple spraying options, but there are a few main differences between the two.

Fixed Dual

The fixed dual shower head system means that both fixtures are attached to the shower wall. You will not be able to use either one as a handheld attachment, but there are certain perks to a fixed dual system. Depending on the brand you choose, the heads can vary in size and spray settings.

When showering, these systems offer the ability to change the spray setting on one or both of the shower heads. This adjustability between both heads gives users a comfortable washing experience. Typically, a fixed dual system provides rainfall capabilities in one head while the second head is often smaller, with several spray options including high-power wash to gentle mist spray.

If you want double the coverage but don’t feel that you need to use one head as a handheld attachment, the fixed dual system is a great option. It is ideal for couples wanting to conserve water and shower at the same time since it provides two water sprays from separate shower heads.

Dual with Handheld

dual shower head combo

A dual shower head with handheld attachment still provides sprays coming from 2 separate directions, but unlike the fixed system, you can use one of the heads as a handheld piece. The additional shower head can either be mounted on the wall or removed for handheld use. This is perfect for cleaning hard-to-reach spots and targeting specific areas of the body.

The dual system with handheld capabilities is a better option if you experience a limited range of motion in your shoulders and upper body. A lot of older or disabled individuals opt for a handheld shower head since it allows for better movement and more thorough washing experience.

According to a leading source on caring for the elderly, a handheld shower is perfect for "an elderly person that is having difficulty with flexibility and reach. If they also have balance, strength and endurance issues, they may benefit from a handheld shower head as it can be used more easily in sitting. It will also allow them to access the shower while it's still dry, decreasing falls risk…"

Advantages of Double Shower Heads

I have already covered a few of the advantages of a fixed double shower head for couples or a handheld attachment for the elderly/disabled, but these aren’t the only perks. In addition to better mobility and water conservation for couples, here’s how a double shower head could benefit your current bathroom situation:

  • Improved water flow from 2 separate sources
  • Provides a larger spray area
  • Dual handheld allows for more washing control
  • Personalized shower experience for everyone in the family
  • Helps to target sore muscles and achy joints
  • Saves on washing time
  • Provides a spa-like showering experience

Raby Hardware says that “you will get to know the real reasons why you should have double shower heads in your bathroom when you shower using one." Once you invest in a dual system, you'll see firsthand why so many people are replacing their old shower heads with a new dual shower head.

Things to Remember when Choosing Dual Shower Heads

When researching the best dual shower head for you, things can start to get confusing rather quickly. There are so many things to consider, and not just in terms of your preferred washing experience.

There are a few considerations you need to make before deciding on one. Here’s what they are.

Mount Type

Wall-mounted shower heads are the norm, but there are several mount types to choose from.

Rainfall shower heads are often mounted from the ceiling; this gives more of an illusion of rain as if it is falling from the sky.

As far as dual shower heads go, one or both of the shower heads are mounted to the wall.

Handheld Showerhead

If you choose a dual handheld attachment, the base of the attachment will be mounted to the wall or directly on the other shower head. There is also the option for a slide bar hanging vertically from the main shower head in which the handheld attachment can slide up and down.

Water Pressure

One of the top reasons for investing in a more modern dual shower head is to improve the water pressure within your shower. Outdated shower heads tend to lose strength over time since they are not as technologically advanced and unwanted minerals start to build up in the nozzles.

Magnificent Plumbing says that there are six potential reasons for low pressure in your shower, and they are:

  • 1
    Old low-flow showerhead
  • 2
    Blocked shower head
  • 3
    Problems with the main’s pressure
  • 4
    A faulty water pressure regulator
  • 5
    Worn out shower volume control
  • 6
    Wider plumbing system issues

As you can see, the top reason for poor water pressure is an old low-flow showerhead; this problem can easily be solved by replacing it with a modern double headed shower fixture. If the water pressure is still lacking, it could be a separate issue within a home’s plumbing system.

Water Flow Rate

The standard rate of water flow is 2.5 gallons per minute (GPM). If you opt for a more efficient shower head to conserve more water, anything that releases 2.0 GPM or less is considered to be "low-flow."

The best low-flow shower heads can reduce the flow output but not affect the overall water pressure. If low water output is what you’re hoping for from your new dual shower head, always read what the reviewers have to say on the pressure and if it is affected by the low-flow features.

Waterpik, a leading shower head company, says that you also need to know your area's water laws: “Depending on where you live, retailers may only sell shower heads with a maximum of 2.5 GPM, 2.0 GPM, or 1.8 GPM flow rate. Further, large retailers may only sell the lowest flows available to simplify product stocking and shipping requirements, and comply with government regulations.”

Spray Settings

This is a biggie for new shower head investors, especially those looking for a high-quality dual system. Dual heads offer a variety of spray settings; sometimes both shower heads provide multiple sprays and sometimes only one head can be adjusted.

The standard spray settings for dual shower systems are rainfall, gentle mist, high-pressure spray, and water-saving mode. Each spray setting offers something unique. The rain and gentle mist settings are ideal for extreme relaxation, whereas high-pressure spray is better for sore muscle relief.

Spray Coverage

A few things can determine the spray coverage. The first is the size of the actual shower head (or heads). Generally speaking, the larger the shower head the more substantial the spray coverage. A 6-inch rainfall shower head will cover more than a 3-inch one. Available spray settings are another determining factor. For example, if the shower head has a wide-spray setting, this will provide a larger area of coverage.

Design & Durability

Another consideration for your new dual shower head is the design features. You want to choose a fixture that fits well into your current bathroom design, whether it is modern, vintage, or eclectic. The main thing to think about is the paint finish of the shower head. In 2019, the most common finishes are chrome, polished brass, brushed nickel, and oil-rubbed bronze.

You should also think about the materials used to construct the shower heads. Many models are made from plastic and then coated in one of the finishes I just mentioned above. Some are more durable and made of stainless steel. Always look for one with flexible rubber nozzles that are easy to clean. If you opt for a dual handheld attachment, look for one with a durable stainless steel hose at least 60 inches in length.

Versatility

Consider your current shower needs before purchasing one of the best dual shower heads. Do you use the shower to wash your dog, are you limited in mobility, and will the kids also be using the shower space? If you answered yes to any of these, you'd want to find a versatile dual shower head, probably one with a handheld attachment. The attachment should come with a long flexible hose that provides even more ease of use.

Cost

A significant concern for renovating a bathroom is cost, and you should not be dumping all of the renovation money into a new dual shower head. Luckily there are plenty of cost-efficient shower heads on the market, even if you want a dual system that provides multiple spray settings, water saving features, and a rainfall option.

Warranty

Most of the shower heads that I will review next come with at least a 3-year limited warranty or a limited lifetime warranty. This means that certain aspects and specific defects will be covered under warranty for the coverage period (whether it is three years or an entire lifetime).

Read up on warranty material before purchasing to see what is covered, what is not, and the process involved in making a warranty claim.

Everyone loves using hand held shower heads, but over the years they have become notorious for breaking after only a short time.

Not anymore – as HammerHead Showers enters the scene. In 2017, Justin and Nessa Ball decided they had had enough of the cheap, flimsy shower heads that are only meant to last a year or two before ultimately ending up in landfills. Their shower heads are focused on quality and durability.

packed shower head

We were thrilled to try out the all metal hand held dual shower head set in chrome and are happy to reveal it as our top pick for best dual shower head for home use.

The set includes an 8” rainfall shower head, a hand held shower with a 72” hose, and a 3-way diverter. All three pieces are made of a combination of stainless steel and brass, with a polished chrome finish. Other finishes such as oil-rubbed bronze and brushed nickel are also available.

You also have the option to purchase separately through their Amazon storefront if you’re not looking for a dual shower experience.

You’ll see the difference between HammerHead Shower Heads and other brands the moment that you open the box. Each piece is thoughtfully wrapped in its own cloth drawstring bag to protect from scratches during the shipment process.

Installation is a breeze as well. Everything you need is included in the box, including Teflon plumber’s tape for a perfect seal. I was able to install the shower head myself in about 15 minutes.

Rated for 2.5 gallons per minute, you can see where the name HammerHead comes from.

I live in a more rural area with more water restrictions, so we did not experience the full 2.5 GPM, but the shower head did make it feel like we were getting an increase in water pressure, due to the thoughtfully designed rubber nozzles.

The diverter allows you to choose between rainfall shower, hand held, or both! It should be noted, though, that using both shower heads at once will make them “share” the water pressure, so flow will be reduced by half.

Overall, we couldn’t be more happy with this shower head set by HammerHead. We’re sure you’ll love it too, but if for any reason you’re not satisfied, you can rest assured with their lifetime warranty.

This is my top pick for the best dual head shower head system. The Ana Bath Combo combines the comfort of a large fixed shower face with the functionality of a handheld hose attachment. You can choose between 3 design finishes for the Ana Bath: brushed nickel, chrome, or oil-rubbed bronze.

You'll never have trouble cleaning the two showerheads since they are lined with anti-clogging nozzles made from easy-to-maintain rubber. The nozzles can resist lime and mineral deposits that tend to happen in shower heads over time. All that is required for cleaning is to push the nozzles with your finger as the warm or hot water is running.

Each head offers five different spray settings which include rain spray, massage spray, massage/rain mix, bubbling spray, and bubbling/rain mix. The handheld attachment can either be fixed in place or used in your hand to wash harder-to-reach body parts. The flow rate is slightly less than average - 2.31 GPM - but this won’t affect the pressure of the spray. You might, however, see a slight decrease in your water bills each month.

"Ana Bath Combo Shower System gives you the easiest way to upgrade your shower system without any tool. No power drill, no screwdrivers, No plumbers, just your hands. With the  LARGE 5 inch SPRAY FACE & 5 function handheld shower and shower head, you can feel a whole new fantastic shower experience with our water saving shower technology which is another way to save your water bill. The sleek design and transitional style fits in any bathroom perfectly." - Ana Bath

If you want the luxury of a rainfall shower with the versatility of a handheld attachment, the Hydroluxe 2-in-1 Shower Head Combo is the best dual shower head for rainfall.

Both heads are 4 inches in diameter, and each provides five unique washing features that are easily adjusted. Despite having a smaller than average head size, this system has excellent flow and a wide range of spray setting options.

My favorite feature of the Hydroluxe is the fact that it has a water-saving mode and pause button for times when high pressure is not necessary. You can turn the water on low when you need to shave your legs or lather up.

Opt to use each shower head separately or both together, whatever you prefer. The five settings on each head - power rain, massage, stay-warm mist, water-saving rain, and pause - provide a total of 24 spray setting combinations to utilize while you shower. This model is easy to clean, easy to install, and easy to adjust, making it my top pick for a dual rain shower head with handheld attachment.

The best dual shower head with slide bar is the 28" Slide Bar Combo by Aqua Dance. Dual shower heads with slide bars have not been standard in the past, but the amount of mobility they provide for the handheld attachment is impressive.

This double shower head slide bar is 28 inches long and hangs directly down from the central showerhead. You can slide the handheld attachment along the bar for optimal spray adjustment.

The main shower head that is fixed to the wall is 7 inches in diameter, which provides a fantastic rain-like shower. The handheld shower is 4 inches wide, and both can be used separately or together. Each head features these spray settings: overhead rainfall, power rain, pulsating massage, hydrating mist, rain/mist, rain/massage, and water-saving pause.

Some reviewers have dubbed this the best high-pressure dual shower head since the water pressure could not be better. The only problem some reviewers experience is leakage at the mounting point of the main shower head. This can be avoided though by using a bit of Teflon tape during installation.

A reviewer on the Target website says, "This shower head set was easy to install without requiring any tools and works well. I haven’t had any leaks and love the hose because it is flexible and log enough for my shower. The water flow could be better but after I pulled out the regulator, it was enough and I have no complaints. The material is not heavy duty but it’s worth the price!"

Pros
  • Advanced high-pressure design
  • Rub-clean jets for easy maintenance
  • Easy height adjustability for the handheld attachment
  • Slide bar installation requires no drilling
Cons
  • Potential leakage at the mounting point

Some shower head shoppers steer away from the Neptune Dual Shower Heads since it does not provide a handheld attachment. They might not realize that the Neptune model has almost as much adjustability as a handheld shower head, if not more. It features two side-by-side identical shower heads that can be easily adjusted to your desired position.

Not only is the position easily changed, but so are the spray settings. Each head has three spray settings, from a soft mist to a powerful stream. Each head swivels independently from the other; if you want to shower with your partner, this will allow you to do so quickly and effectively without bumping heads.

Installation can be done in a matter of minutes since the Neptune has the standard shower head thread size and merely is mounted to the wall. The double shower head manifold that is made of brass is sturdy, so you probably won't ever need to use the limited lifetime warranty. The only negative feedback is that the flow is not always evenly distributed through the two heads and it is not ideal if your home suffers from weak water pressure.

Pros
  • Easy wall-mounting installation
  • Solid brass shower head manifold
  • Easy to adjust position and spray settings
Cons
  • Not ideal for homes with weak water pressure
  • Water Flow is not always evenly distributed

Just want to feel as if you’re showering in the rain? My top pick for you is the DreamSpa dual shower head with rainfall and handheld combo. DreamSpa caters to you by providing several options; you can get a dual rainfall shower head with a slide bar, one with an extended hose, and pick and choose the size of each shower head face.

My preferred DreamSpa model is the fixed 7-inch rainfall shower head with the 4-inch handheld attachment. The rainfall head is fixed and the handheld attachment is mounted on the base of the rainfall head. You can use both at once or just one at a time. The handheld shower head has seven spray settings: power rain, pulsating massage, hydro-mist, eco-rain, rain/mist, rain/massage, and water-saving pause mode.

"My husband and I have tried several shower heads. Most of them over $100. This one is amazing and is such an incredible shower head. It has wide spray and amazing pressure." - Lowe's customer Katie

Pros
  • Soothing rainfall pairs well with handheld settings
  • Provides spa-like experience on a budget
  • Rub-clean jets and 3-way water diverter
  • Tools-free installation

  • Some users wish for a longer hose

If you're looking for a dual shower head with tons of different spray settings, this HotelSpa is the best choice. The 6-inch rainfall shower head provides six unique settings, and the 4-inch handheld attachment can be adjusted to 6 settings as well.

The spray patterns of each include power rain, pulsating massage, hydrating mist, rain/massage, rain/mist, and water-saving economy rain. You can use each shower head alone or simultaneously, but one reviewer has claimed that "using both heads at the same time will diminish the water power."

A few reviewers have commented that the dual shower head system failed on them rather quickly, but the company stays true to the limited lifetime warranty. If need be, it is easy to receive a replacement with no hassle whatsoever.

"I loved the thought of having two shower heads in one because one can be used for the body and one can be used for your head. The quality of the shower heads are amazing and really durable. Not to mention it was really easy to hook up! This is only the second shower head I have ever used and it was definitely better than the first one. I love the different ways it can spray water and the chrome is actually really awesome looking. I would recommend this to anyone looking for a great high quality shower head." - A satisfied customer from the Lowe's website

Pros
  • Tons of combination spray settings
  • High-power Precision SpiralFlo dial design
  • Easy maintenance with rub-clean nozzles
Cons
  • Weak water pressure while running both heads

Delta Faucet is a well-known name when it comes to shower heads, and the top choice for a Delta dual shower head is the In2ition Handheld Shower Head with Hose. Delta Faucet takes design innovation seriously; the design is like nothing I have ever seen in a shower head. The handheld piece docks into the face of the main shower head.

It is intensely powerful with massaging jets that can be adjusted to 4 great spray options. The four settings include full body spray, fast massaging spray, full body spray with massage, and pause mode. Reviewers say that the Delta Faucet can alleviate sore muscles better than any shower head they have used before. We have reviewed other massaging shower heads here.

The only drawback is the price. This is not the "budget-friendly" option on this list, but the powerful spray and sleek design make up for this. It is not only functional, but it looks good, feels good and will change the way you view showering.

"I love the shower heads that will blast you and allow you to have a handle that gets daily use. Cleaning your body and cleaning your shower just seems wonderful with this system. I love my DELTA In2ition!" - A reviewer on the Delta website

Pros
  • Sleek design in chrome or stainless finish
  • Perfect for relieving body tension
  • Easy installation within minutes
  • Conservative pause mode and water-saving trickle
Cons
  • Pricey
  • Might be too powerful for some

Having a shower head with an LED light might not seem like a necessity, but you’ll change your mind after a week with the Luminex LED Shower Head Combo. This 24-setting color changing LED shower head requires no batteries whatsoever; the lights within the head interface are powered by running water.

Not only do both shower heads feature seven changing LED light colors, but they also have an air jet design to maximize the overall water pressure. It works by injecting oxygen into the water flow through the nozzles. Not only does this optimize pressure but it also prevents the rub-clean nozzles from clogging up with unwanted mineral deposits.

Each shower head is 4 inches in diameter and features four unique spray settings including rain, massage, rain with massage, and water-saving pause. The only drawback is the 1-year limited warranty, which is much shorter warranty coverage than most dual shower heads on the market.

Pros
  • Easy cleaning
  • Air jet technology for maximum pressure
  • LED lights powered by running water
  • Adjustable angles for maximum coverage
Cons
  • Short warranty period
  • Some say the light colors are "tacky."

Another well-known name in the shower head industry, Moen offers a quality product with the Moen Dual Shower Head featuring Magnetic Holder Technology. Their Magnetix technology is an easy way to securely dock your showerhead. All you need to do is move the handheld attachment near the magnetic dock, and you'll feel it securely lock into place.

The 3-way diversion technology allows you to use either the rain shower head or the attachment by themselves or use them both simultaneously. The rain shower head has only one setting - rainfall -, but the accessory features six settings plus a pause button.

Other than the high price, the only downfall of the Moen shower head is the weak water pressure when using both heads at once. This can be fixed though by removing the flow restrictor found within each shower head.

One DIYer from Southern California writes, "Install was super easy and it looks awesome. After some little adjustment it works exactly as advertised. Controls are easy to reach and use. Love the quick shut-off switch on the handle and of course the magnetic attachment is much better than other brands with pressure fit. Excellent spray at all adjustments even with lower water pressure."

Pros
  • Magnetix technology for secure locking and release
  • Low-flow with only 2.0 GPM
  • Fits within any bathroom design
  • Six adjustable spray settings + rainfall
Cons
  • Expensive
  • Poor pressure unless flow restrictor is removed

The top shower head for preventing mold and mildew growth is the AquaDance Antimicrobial High-Pressure Shower Combo. This double headed shower head uses a revolutionary microban antimicrobial technology registered by the EPA that inhibits the growth of mildew, mold, and mineral deposits.

The New Yorker says that “since showerheads are extreme environments—alternately soaking wet and bone dry—their inhabitants include not only bacteria and fungi but also more unusual creatures like amoebae, algae, and protists." Nobody wants these things in their shower, but luckily you can avoid them with the AquaDance dual shower head.

Both heads provide six spray settings: rain, massage, mist, rain/massage, rain/mist and water-saving ON/OFF pause. If you hate cleaning the bathroom, specifically the shower, you can’t go wrong with this AquaDance model. Just remember that you still need to clean the shower, just not as often.

Pros
  • Antimicrobial/anti-clogging technology
  • Easy maintenance provides longer product life
  • Easy tool-free installation
  • Easy to adjust spray settings and angles
Cons
  • Good product, but overpriced.
  • Blue-colored nozzles don’t appeal to everyone

How to Use Dual Shower Heads

Ana Bath Dual Shower

The guide for how to use your new dual shower head system depends on which model you buy.

All of the ones I mentioned above use a 3-way diversion technology. This means that you can use one shower head at a time or both simultaneously.

Controlling the spray of the shower head is done by turning each one’s ON/OFF valve to your liking.

As far as adjusting the spray settings, this is usually done by turning the swiveling face of the shower head.

Installation & Maintenance

Hiring a professional plumber is not necessary for shower head installation. The steps involved are simple as long as you purchase a shower head that has standard thread fittings (which all the ones I listed do!). For installation, you will need a wrench, your new shower head kit, and some Teflon tape.

Maintenance is just as easy. The best dual shower heads feature rub-clean jet nozzles that only require you to rub the jets with your fingers while the water is running. This will release any buildup that happens over time. For tougher-to-clean shower heads, you might want to soak the head in vinegar for a few hours to get rid of gunk and residue.

People Also Ask (FAQs)

Can changing the shower head increase pressure?

Yes! This won’t always solve your poor water pressure problems, but it is the first thing to try (and it often works). Outdated shower heads tend to lose pressure over time due to rust and mineral buildup, so your best bet is to replace it.

If you still experience low water pressure, try removing the flow restrictor within the shower head. If this still doesn’t do the trick, your water pressure issues might have to do with underlying plumbing problems within your home.

Can I have both shower heads turned on at the same time?

Of course. The 3-way diversion technology I talked about before is what makes this possible. You need to set the ON/OFF valve on each individual shower head to your liking. You can easily shower with both heads running at once, or just one providing a powerful spray.

Do dual shower heads use more water than regular shower heads?

No. The water output for standard showers is 2.5 gallons per minute unless you choose a more efficient low-flow option. This 2.5 gallons will be distributed between BOTH shower heads.

How much pressure should I expect if I use dual shower heads?

Most dual shower heads provide pressure that can be compared to a single-shower head. Even with even distribution of flow, the dual system uses advanced aerated technology that adds air bubbles into the water stream, giving the illusion of high water pressure while also conserving water.

How can I increase water pressure after installing a dual shower head?

If you are experiencing low pressure in your dual shower head system, you can remove the flow restrictor on each or both of the shower heads. Just be wary that this could also show an increase in your water bills each month.

Conclusion

I highly recommend the HammerHead All Metal Shower Head. This is my number 1 pick for three reasons, the easy DIY installation, easily adjustable spray settings, and all metal design built to last. When in doubt, you can't go wrong with this model, and it will make your time in the shower feel like a trip to the spa.
