Best RV Shower Heads For Multipurpose Functionality

Getting high water pressure from your RV’s shower while traveling is hard to find. Remain energy efficiency on the road with these top-rated shower heads!

by PlumberAndy

If you're a serious camper, standard RV shower heads just don't cut the mustard. When you're off the grid and only have a water pump to work with, you're not going to be able to achieve the kind of pressure you deserve with a standard, pre-installed shower head.

Specialized RV shower heads, on the other hand, can increase the pressure by pushing air through the stream so that you can clean yourself properly. Not only that, but they’re also much better at conserving water thanks to their lower GPM and higher-quality low-flow and shut-off valves, which is hugely important when you’re dry camping.

If you haven’t already replaced your RV shower head, it’s probably time you did. To help you with this, we’ve put together this comprehensive buyer’s guide to the best RV shower heads.

RV Shower Heads Explained

An RV shower head is just like the shower head you have in your bathroom at home, but with a few critical differences.

For example, most RV shower heads tend to be handheld units rather than permanent installations for added versatility. These units are connected to a hose which links up to your RV plumbing.

RV shower heads also tend to be designed to be more efficient and have lower flows to conserve water better when you're off the grid.

RV Travel

How these water saving shower heads work is simple: they restrict the water flow as it passes through them. They have smaller holes than traditional shower heads to increase the pressure. Some units also have a mechanism by which they mix the water flow with air to further improve water pressure. The latter kind is known as aerating shower heads.

Different Types of Camper Shower Heads

When you’re looking for a new RV shower head, you’ll find that there are a few different types of camper shower heads to choose from. Here are the main categories you should know about.

Single Function Vs. Multi-Function

Single function camper shower heads are the standard, basic shower heads - they have only one setting. You turn them on, and they spray water at their default pressure and flow rate.

Multi-function shower heads are a little different. They typically have several settings so that you can adjust them to suit your needs. For example, you might be able to change the stream of water from a spray to a jet. You can also often change the flow rate and water pressure of these kinds of shower heads.

Handheld Vs. Fixed

RV Showerhead

Handheld shower heads are great for RV campers as you can move them around to better clean specific areas of your body.

This added adjust-ability makes it easier to get a proper wash when water pressure is low, and also means you can potentially use it for other purposes.

For example, if your hose is long enough, you can take it outside to wash your dog.

Fixed shower heads don't have this flexibility as they're fixed in place. This makes them a little less functional, but they do come with their own set of benefits. For example, they allow you to be a bit more creative with your RV bathroom setup.

There are many different types of fixed RV shower heads. You can have wall mounted shower heads, and ceiling mounted shower heads, rain systems, body sprays, and many more.

Factors to Consider When Purchasing an RV Shower Head

Ok, now that we’ve covered the basics, let’s look at what you should look for in a shower head so that you can make more well-informed purchase decisions.

Water Pressure & Flow

Probably the two most important factors to consider in your RV shower head are the water pressure and flow rate. Flow rates are often quoted in GPM measurements, which stands for Gallons per Minute.

The reason GPM is so essential is that it gives you a picture of how much water you'll use up when you shower. Generally speaking, the lower the GPM, the better. This is because RVs typically have a limited water capacity when they're off the grid, and you need to make your water tank last.

You should be aiming for a GPM of less than 2 GPM if possible. Some pre-installed shower heads have 3.5 GPM or more, which can lay your water tank to waste in a few minutes.

Water pressure is precisely what it says - the strength of the water your shower head allows. The higher the pressure, the more powerful the stream of water coming out, and the easier it will be to get clean.

Your water pressure is usually defined by your water source and water pressure regulator. In RVs, water pressure will often be low, especially if you're using a water pump. Some RV shower heads can help to improve this water pressure by adding air as it travels through them.

Water Saving Technology

Another thing to look out for in your RV shower head is water saving technology. These kinds of features can help you to conserve water more effectively.

The most critical water saving feature to look out for is shut-off or auto restrictor valve. These valves can sometimes be in the form of an on-off switch. They allow you to shut off or restrict the water flow while you're lathering up soap to conserve water.

Leak and drip shutoff valves don’t completely cut off the water. This is a safety feature to prevent hot water from building up and scalding you, but some RV users see this feature as more of an annoyance than a benefit as it can cause the temperature of the water to drop and increases wastage.

If you agree, you can also find shutoff valves that completely stop the flow so that you don't waste a drop of water.

Hose Length

Many RV shower heads will come with a hose. These hoses come in different lengths, but most of them are somewhere between 60 and 70 inches. You should consider how long you need the hose to be. You should also look for a hose that’s flexible and durable.

Versatility (Ease of Use)

Another factor to consider is how versatile and easy the shower head is to use. Handheld units tend to be the most versatile, and some units can be much easier to manage and install than others. It’s worth looking at what other buyers are saying about the shower head in the reviews to find out how easy it is to use.

Design & Durability

Nobody wants a shower head that looks awful and ruins the aesthetic of their RV. You also don't want to invest in something that's low-quality and going to break after a couple of weeks use. That's why design and durability are essential.

In terms of durability, the material is essential. Shower heads made out of cheap plastic are unlikely to last as long as those made out of higher quality materials such as stainless steel, which is resistant to rust and corrosion.

In terms of design, it depends on your personal preference, but the finish is essential. I think chrome finishes look great in most RV bathrooms.

Installation

If you're not a professional plumber or great at DIY, you'll want to choose a showerhead that is simple and easy to install. Again, handheld units tend to be the easiest to set up as you usually need to link them up to your water supply/plumbing and they're ready to go.

Extra Features

The best RV shower heads will come with additional features that make them more functional, durable, versatile, and safe. Here are some extra features to look out for…

  • Anti-clog (this helps to protect your RV shower head from limescale build-up)
  • Filters (these can filter chemicals and bacteria out of the water to make it safer to bathe in, which is vital if you're using a questionable water supply)
  • Adjustable sprays (this allows you to change the settings so you can enjoy a variety of options from massage sprays to jet streams)

Certification & Warranty

The best RV shower heads will come with a generous warranty period.

Some offer lifetime warranties that will cover you permanently against defective parts and manufacturer faults.

It's important to consider the warranty as a decent warranty shows the manufacturer has confidence in their quality and indicates that it's probably going to be a better, more durable product.

WaterSense Promotion Label

Certification is another good indication of quality and reliability. For example, the WaterSense label by the Environmental Protection Agency shows that your shower head is environmentally friendly and has a GPM of 2 or less. UPC certification is another one to look out for.

There are various other plumbing-related certificates besides these, which you can find out more about here if you’re interested.

The Oxygenics 10615-00 is my top pick for the best RV shower head for four reasons: it’s powerful, it’s durable, it’s adjustable, and it’s affordable.

The water pressure on this thing is next level. It's an aerated shower head with a powerful oxygenic setting that can give your water pressure a massive boost for those times when you need a dependable power shower.

It also has a low flow regulator that works excellent and can be easily activated just by pushing a button. However, be aware that it's intentionally not a complete shut off valve. It doesn't completely stop the water flow but instead reduces it to a slow dribble. This is by design to maintain normal water temperature and is an important safety feature.

Another thing I like about this Oxygenic shower is how little maintenance it requires. The non-stick internal parts prevent limescale from building up even when you’re running it in hard water conditions, so you don’t need to worry about cleaning it to prevent clogging - it takes care of itself. This also makes it more durable and likely to last longer before you need to replace it.

It's available in multiple finishes, but the cheapest option is the regular white plastic finish. It's an all-around excellent shower head that deserves the top spot, and other buyers seem to agree.

For example, this happy buyer switched out his pre-installed RV shower head and couldn't be happier. He says on his YouTube review, "dollar for dollar, this is the best upgrade we could've done."

Pros
  • Oxygenic setting boosts pressure
  • Little cleaning/maintenance required
  • Great low-flow regulator
  • Very durable
Cons
  • Only one spray pattern (non-adjustable)
  • Cheaper shower heads are available

Next up, we have the Dura Faucet RV Shower Head and Hose Kit, and my runner up for the best single function RV shower head title. Like the Oxygenic model above, this shower head has only one spray function, but it sure works great!

Also, like the Oxygenic model, it has an auto restrictor valve which reduces the flow to a drizzle for when you need to lather up and don't want to waste water. I found that the drizzle setting is beneficial for helping with water conservation when your tank is low, and you need it to last a little longer.

The build quality on this shower head deserves a lot of praise too, especially considering the price. It’s constructed from the highest quality, premium-grade synthetic resins, so it’s super-durable, lightweight, and resistant to both fading and corrosion. I’d expect no less from one of the best RV shower head brands on the market!

It's a handheld showerhead, which means it's flexible enough to get a good wash and can be moved around freely. It's also got excellent water pressure and a pretty low GPM of 2.2.

This is much lower than standard units which are usually around 3.5 GPM so it will conserve water, but there are RV shower heads with even lower GPM available.

My favorite thing about this shower head, though, is the design. It's available in a range of really great-looking finishes. The oil rubbed bronze finish is my personal favorite. It looks super stylish.

Pros
  • Great value for money
  • Stylish design
  • Good water pressure
  • Excellent build quality
Cons
  • GPM is higher than some other shower heads
  • Only one spray setting

Unlike the two single-function RV shower heads above, this high-pressure RV shower head unit from PIH has multiple functions. In fact, in my opinion, it's the best multi-functional RV handheld showerhead on the market.

It has three functions that you can change between depending on what mood you're in: powerful shooting, pulse massage, and pause. The pulse massage setting is particularly impressive. There's nothing better when you've just finished a long hike with the kids and want to relax and unwind.

You might think all that adjustability wouldn't come cheap, but you'd be wrong. This is one of the most affordable shower heads on the market.

It comes with a shower bracket, shower head, hose, and manual - everything you need for a quick, easy installation.

The only thing that I think could be improved on this is the design. The yellow finish isn't quite to my tastes, but that doesn't mean it wouldn't work well in your RV. It depends on your style and preference.

Pros
  • Very affordable
  • Multiple, adjustable settings
  • Water pressure is good
Cons
  • Plastic finish
  • Design isn’t super-stylish
  • No on-off switch

12 Months

This YOO.MEE handheld RV shower head is specifically designed to work well with low-pressure water pipes. That means that it's great for when you're running off a water pump alone or some other low-pressure source and need a pressure boost.

It has a 2.5 GPM, which, while still lower than standard shower heads, is a little higher than some other low-flow RV shower heads on this list. The higher GPM does however afford you even more water pressure which is part of the reason why this shower head is the best for low-pressure water pipes in RVs.

It also has the three adjustable spray settings like the product above: massage, powerful shooting, and mixed. The build quality is pretty good too. The head is made from engineering-grade, heat-resistant plastic while the hose is stainless steel, so you don’t have to worry about rust or splits.

Another fantastic feature about this shower head is how long the hose is. Most shower hoses are around 60 inches, but this thing comes with a hose that's nearly 80 inches long. Those extra 20 inches go a long way and make it a lot more versatile.

It comes in a great-looking box and attractive packaging too, which you can see in this unboxing video. The buyer in the video seems to pretty happy with it also, as he calls it "the best shower I've ever had at this price point - probably ever."

The generous warranty period will cover you for 12 months, suggesting that the manufacturers of this product are confident that it will last at least a year, which is excellent!

Pros
  • Extra-long hose
  • High build quality
  • Enormous water pressure for low-pressure water sources
  • Generous warranty
  • Multiple functions
Cons
  • Relatively high GPM for a low-flow unit (water conservation could be better)

We've seen some excellent 3-setting RV shower heads, now let's take it up a notch. This AquaDance handheld RV shower head has not just 3, not 4, not 5, but a whopping six different settings for ultimate adjustability.

Settings include power rain, pulsating massage, power mist, rain mist, rain massage, and the always-desirable ‘water saving pause mode' (which is an auto restrictor for water conservation).

Remember how I said that certification is an important thing to look out for? Well, the great thing about this AquaDance unit is it’s certified to meet to US compliance standards, which is something that many budget shower heads can’t claim to be.

As if that wasn’t enough reason to put your trust in this shower head, it’s also backed up by a lifetime warranty for complete peace of mind.

It's a handheld shower, but you can fix it in place on the mount and use it as a regular overhead shower too. Another thing I enjoyed about this unit is the ergonomic grip and handle rub-clean jets, which make it easy to use and clean.

Pros
  • Comes with a lifetime warranty
  • Meets strict US compliance standards
  • Highly-adjustable (6 settings)
  • High-quality materials and finish
Cons
  • Pressure could be better
  • GPM is a little high

The ShowerMaxx Luxury Spa Series is precisely that - luxury. It has a lot in common with the AquaDance unit above, like a generous lifetime warranty, six adjustable spray settings (one of my favorites is the shampoo spray, which is great for rinsing the suds off your hair), and a super-high-quality build.

It also has a removable flow restrictor, which means you can leave it on to conserve water or take it out when you want a little more pressure. It’s probably the best handheld RV shower head with removable flow restrictor out there.

The stainless steel hose is 60 inches, but if you need a little extra slack, you can stretch it up to 80 inches. This adjustable hose length is a cool feature that a lot of other products lack, and deserves praising.

The fact that its adjustable means you get all the benefits of extra distance when you need it, but don't have to worry about that extra slack getting in the way when you only need the standard 60 inches.

Another stand-out feature in this unit for me is the mesh filter which filters out any sediment and debris from your water supply to prevent clogging and allow you to have a cleaner, more hygienic shower.

There’s a lot more good things to say about this shower head, but I’ll let you check out the rest for yourself! It’s a little pricier than other RV shower heads on this list, but you get what you pay for.

Pros
  • Stretchable hose
  • Six different awesome settings
  • Lifetime warranty
  • Stylish and durable finish
Cons
  • More expensive than some other RV shower heads

Thanks to the ‘unique air-core technology,' the Ecocamel Jetstorm Handheld Shower Head Wand is the best-aerated RV shower head I've come across. It adds a powerful stream of air to the water that works well for increasing the power of the jet.

You can get a mighty stream even when you're working with low water pressure. The product page doesn't list the GPM, but suffice to say it should be low-flow compared to your pre-installed unit.

Unlike some of the other products we’ve mentioned, this shower head is just that - the shower head. It doesn’t come with a connector hose like many others, so you’ll have to use it with your existing one.

While this might not be ideal if you need to replace a leaky hose, it does mean it’s easy to install even if you’re terrible at DIY. It’s as simple as unscrewing your old shower head and replacing it with the new one.

Another thing I liked about the Ecocamel Jetstorm was the wipe-clean rubber nodules on the shower head, which are easy to clean, so you don't have to worry about limescale building up and reducing pressure.

It loses a few points as it doesn't come with an on-off button, which would have been useful for conserving water in between rinses, but you can't have it all.

Pros
  • Easy maintenance and cleaning
  • Powerful stream thanks to aerating technology
  • High-quality finish
Cons
  •  No on-off button
  •  Doesn't come with a hose

Limited one year

If you're looking for a budget shower head for your RV, then the Camco 43712 is sure to tick all the boxes.

Although it is the cheapest product on the list, it still comes equipped with five settings and an on/off switch that can help to ensure maximum water preservation.

The on/off switch on this head shut the water off completely, which can sometimes cause a temperature problem for campers, but none of the Amazon reviews mention this as a con.

The price of this shower head is the main draw to the product, but it's important to note that this head is sold independently of the hose or brackets. If you're looking for a shower kit complete with a hose, they are available from the same Amazon listing, but they cost slightly more.

However, if you're looking to replace your shower head to a well-priced head with more functions, this would be the right choice.

Pros
  •  Low Price
  •  On/Off Switch
  •  5 Different Settings
Cons
  •  Only 1 Year Warranty
  •  Hose Not Included

This six setting kit is one of the best RV shower head kits available; however, compared to some similar products on the market, the price of this one is quite high.

This kit is perfect for anyone looking to install a fixed shower in their RV as it comes equipped with a bracket mount and comes in a variety of stylish metal finishes.

This showerhead is also one of the most versatile options on the list as it features a removable flow restrictor which can be used if you want to increase the GPM when you're hooked up to a water supply.

It's a self-cleaning mechanism, and easy install makes it a quick and hassle-free addition to any RV or van conversion.

Although the price is quite high, it does come with a 5-year warranty, which is a lot longer than some of the other cheaper models that are currently available.

Pros
  • Stylish finishes available
  • Self Cleaning nozzle
  • Removable Restrictor
Cons
  • Relatively expensive compared to other models
  • Longer hose products available

In my opinion, the Delta Faucet 7-Spray is the Best 7-spray massage hand shower for RV's. Not only does it have more functions than any of the other showers on this list, but it's also an excellent price for what you get.

It comes in a choice of two flow rates, the lowest being 2 GPM, making it perfect if you're looking to limit your water usage as much as possible.

Despite the low flow rate, the shower head still features a massage jet function that makes it the right choice for anyone who needs to relax after a long day of climbing or hiking.

The shower head comes equipped with an extra long hose making it easy to use in any RV set-up.

The product is also equipped with clean touch holes that can help you to avoid limescale build up without having to give the showerhead a deep clean.

Pros
  • Extra long hose
  • Variety of settings
  • Low flow-rate
Cons
  • Pause feature rather than on/off switch
  • Cheaper units available

Advantages of RV Shower Heads

RV shower heads have a lot of benefits that you don't get with pre-installed shower heads or bathroom units. Here are a few of them:

Better Water Conservation

Thanks to low flow rates and conservation features like auto restriction valves, RV shower heads are much better at conserving water. This means you don’t have to fill up your water tank as regularly and is better for the environment.

Save Money

You won't just save water, you'll save money too. Many RV parks will charge you to fill up your tank or, if you're hooked up to their supply, based on how much water you use. RV shower heads use less water, so you'll probably end up saving money.

Easier to Wash With

As most RV shower heads have a mechanism for increasing water pressure and are handheld, it’s easier to use them to wash with. You can move it around reach areas you couldn’t reach with a fixed shower head.

More Versatile

Handheld RV shower heads are versatile. You can move them around to clean your dog, bathe with, or even wash your RV.

Safer

As some RV shower heads have extra safety features like filters to convert chlorinated water to clean water, they’re usually safer than standard units.

Therapeutic

Some RV shower heads come with adjustable sprays and settings to make your shower more comfortable. A water massage from your shower can be just what you need after a long day of camping or hiking!

RV Shower Replacement

Most RV shower heads will come with specific installation instructions. You usually don't need to be a plumber to replace your RV shower as some units are straightforward to install, but it depends on the product.

Again, make sure you check the manual, but to give you an idea of the necessary steps involved, here are some general RV shower replacement instructions:

  • 1
Turn off your water supply by turning the shower knobs into the off position
  • 2
Unscrew the existing hose from the plumbing.
  • 3
If you’re changing the mount, unscrew it from the wall and seal the screw holes with a waterproof sealant.
  • 4
Install the mount. If it’s a suction cup mount, stick it on the wall. If you need to screw it in, do so. Make sure you install it at the right height.
  • 5
Screw the new hose onto your plumbing and run it through the mount
  • 6
Screw on the stopper and attach the shower head
  • 7
Turn your water supply on and see if it works!

Cleaning and Maintenance: RV Shower-heads

To keep your RV shower head in tip-top condition, you should carry out some routine cleaning and maintenance tasks once in a while.

The main thing you have to worry about is limescale build-up, which can clog the holes in your showerhead, thereby reducing water pressure and ruining your shower. Some of the best RV shower heads come with self-cleaning and anti-clog features, but if yours doesn't, here's what you need to do:

  • Grab a strong plastic bag
  • Mix baking soda with white vinegar in the bag to create a homemade cleaning solution
  • Attach the bag full of your cleaning solution around your shower head so that it’s submerged in the solution, then secure it with an elastic band.
  • Leave your showerhead in the solution overnight to get rid of the build-up
  • Remove the bag and run your water supply for a while to wash away the remaining solution
  • You’re done! Go and enjoy a cleaner, more powerful shower!

Frequently Asked Questions

What are good RV shower head brands?

Some of the best and most popular showerhead brands include Oxygenics, Camco, Aqua Elegante, Dura Faucet, and ETL. You'll find many of these brands in our list of the best shower heads above!

Are handheld RV shower heads better than the regular shower heads?

Yes, they're much better than standard shower heads for RVs as they're specifically designed to meet the needs of campers better. They're better at conserving water, more flexible, and can often boost water pressure when you're off the grid.

Is it possible to have a high-pressure flow even when my water pressure is low?

Yes, but only if you use a specially-designed RV shower head that is capable of increasing water pressure. Aerating shower heads can do this by mixing air with the flow of water.

In what ways can you increase Water Pressure in an RV?

There are a few ways you can increase your RV water pressure. You could try increasing the pressure knob on your water pump in small increments, checking your connections to the water supply, changing to a higher pressure outside source, and using devices that can increase strength to your appliances (like RV shower heads). This article provides some more useful information on this topic.

Does an RV shower head conserve water?

Yep, it sure does! RV shower heads typically have a low GPM, which means they use less water per minute than standard shower heads, thus helping to conserve water.

How many gallons of water does an RV shower use?

It depends on the RV shower head you’re using. You can estimate how many gallons of water you’ll use per shower by multiplying the GPM of your shower head by the length of your shower (in minutes). For example, a 2 GPM shower head will use 20 gallons of water for a 10-minute shower.

How long does an RV shower head last?

Most RV shower heads will last for at least a couple of years before they need replacing, but it depends on the quality and durability of the product you choose to use.

Conclusion

Ok, that’s all you need to know about the best RV shower heads!

Now that you know what to look for, you have no more excuses not to replace that standard pre-installed unit you've been using, so go and grab an Oxygenics 10615-00 handheld sprayer kit and finally get that high-pressure shower you deserve. Happy camping!
