Why Choose Elkay?

Elkay is famous for being a family-owned company that got its start in 1920. They started off specializing in only stainless steel sinks, but have branched out into other durable materials as well, like quartz and fireclay. In addition to sinks, Elkay also carries other essential residential and commercial fixtures, like top-rated faucets, foodservice products, and even drinking fountains.

The main reason to choose Elkay over another popular sink manufacturer is that this is a brand you can trust. Having started in 1920, you can count on Elkay to deliver on their promises. Unlike news brands, Elkay has been around the block a time or two.

Guide to Buying an Elkay Kitchen Sink

Sink Type/Style

Out of all the top sink manufacturers of our time, Elkay offers the most variety in terms of sink type and style. You’re even able to find a scullery sink here, and this says quite a bit.

When deciding on sink type and style, the main thing to determine is in which room in the house that you'll be installing the sink. Kitchen sinks are much different from bathroom sinks, and a bathroom sink would not serve well in a laundry room.

Sink Material

Elkay Lusterone Farmhouse Sink

As you read from the list of Elkay’s commonly-used materials, Elkay specializes in a wide variety of sink materials, including stainless steel, quartz, fireclay, and antimicrobial copper.

We can’t tell you which one is best since there are a lot of factors involved, like personal design preference and budget.

Take fireclay as an example; although this is a striking material that looks amazing no matter what, a fireclay sink might not fit within your budget. Stainless steel is a great budget-friendly alternative, and the same goes for quartz composite. No matter which material you choose, Elkay has created sinks that are built to last.

Number of Bowls

At Elkay, you’re by no means limited on the number of bowls within your sink. They offer a variety of single, double, and triple bowls sinks, with plenty of design options within each category. For optimal space for washing large pots and pans or wringing out laundry, go with a large single bowl sink. For more versatility, say with washing and drying dishware, a double bowl might be a better solution.

So when is it suitable to purchase a triple bowl sink? To be completely honest, it is very rare to need 3 basins within a sink, but there comes a time for everything. A triple bowl sink is more common in commercial kitchen settings where dishes, cutlery, and cooking essentials are being used.

Mounting Style

The 3 typical mounting styles include undermount, top mount, and dual (universal) mount. There is no right or wrong answer on the mounting method you choose. Many people prefer the undermount style because it looks more modern since it creates one seamless line between the sink and countertop space. The downside is that an under-mounted sink is difficult to install, and it's very likely that you’ll need to call a pro.

Just as the name suggests, a top mount sink is mounted from on top of the countertop and dropped-in from above. These are much easier to install, and there's a good chance you'll be able to do it on your own as long as your home has standard plumbing. Some people don’t love that top-mounting a sink leaves a ridge on the countertop surface. This isn’t as aesthetically pleasing, plus it can trap kitchen gunk and grime over time.

Size & Depth of Bowl vs. Kitchen Counter Space

If you have yet to measure your available counter and cabinet space, it’s time to go find your measuring tape. Knowing the exact amount of space you have available is essential, and this needs to be done before you even start shopping around for your new sink. Sinks vary drastically in size - even a kitchen sink can measure anywhere between 15 to 36 inches.

Drain Position & Plumbing

If your current sink has a drain that is positioned in the exact center of the basin, the easiest installation will come from choosing a centered drain. However, there are pros to choosing a sink that features an offset drain.

The main perk is that you don’t have to worry about the sink filling up with murky water when a pile of dishes or large pot is sitting on or partially covering the drain. If you do choose to change up your current drain configuration, calling a professional plumber is a good idea.

Elkay Fireclay Single Bowl

Installation Method

Once you’ve decided on the mounting style, it’s time to get into the logistics of the sink installation. With you be DIY-ing, or is calling in an expert a must? Do you have proper installation tools, and if not, what is needed?  On average, the cost to install a kitchen sink is about $395. Of course, this number could be higher or lower depending on a few things, like the type of sink, your current plumbing situation, and your specific location within the US.

Price & Warranty

Consumer Reports recently released a piece on the myths and facts on buying a kitchen sink. Here’s what CR has to say about their findings:

We didn't find much difference between a $115 stainless-steel sink and one for $420, or between an $80 faucet and one for $600. Expensive, thicker-gauge stainless didn't necessarily perform better than thinner models.

This is even more motivation to try and stay within budget during the sink-buying process. If you’re between two sinks that seem relatively similar and can’t make up your mind, go with the more cost-efficient one. That said, you need to be willing to pay more for a luxury material, larger sink dimensions, or special features. And whatever you do, don’t purchase a sink that doesn’t come with a limited lifetime warranty.

Farmhouse Undermount

The most popular Elkay farmhouse sink combines the classic farmhouse design with modern finishes. The model we’re referring to is the Lustertone ELUHD2520. Not only is this the most popular farmhouse model, but it is also the go-to choice if you’re looking for an Elkay stainless steel undermount sink. Farmhouse sinks are often made from ceramic or composite material, but Elkay offers the option for a flawless stainless steel finish.

This sink is made from the highest quality 18-gauge steel on the market for lasting durability and a lustrous shine. Some customers have critiqued Elkay for not using 16-gauge steel, which is slightly thicker. But when compared side by side, there is not much difference between the two, other than the fact that 16-gauge steel costs exponentially more. As long as you use the proper cleaning tools and products, your 18-gauge steel will have no problem lasting a lifetime.

The undermount single bowl design spans 25 inches in width, which is smaller than most farmhouse sinks. Some people prefer the smaller basin (and even need it if they are limited on cabinet space), while others wish that this sink came in a slightly larger size. If you’re looking for a medium-size farmhouse sink, though, the Lustertone fits the bill. For those of you who are looking for something larger, there are plenty more farmhouse sinks to choose from at Elkay.

The look of stainless steel isn’t for everyone, which is why there are so many positive Elkay fireclay farmhouse sink reviews for the SWUF2520WH model. This is another farmhouse sink, but instead of stainless steel, this one is constructed from handcrafted fine fireclay. It still features the same exposed front-apron as all other farmhouse sinks, but every sink is handcrafted to perfection.

Similar to the last model, the width of the SWUF2520WH is about 25 inches, which is excellent if you need a medium-sized sink rather than a massive 33 or 36-inch model. The perk of this one over the last farmhouse mode, though, is that it quite a bit deeper. Instead of just 7 ⅞ inches, it measures over 10 inches deep. A 10” depth is more ideal for washing large pots and pans by hand.

Although the fireclay construction makes this sink more costly, it is also more durable. The sink material is fired at high temperatures to give it a smooth finish, but more importantly, to give it extreme durability. It is scratch, stain, and heat resistant, making it the perfect solution for all your heavy-duty household tasks. When compared to cast iron, fireclay sinks take the win since they don’t have the chance of cracking as a cast iron sink does.

If you don’t like the look of stainless steel but don’t like the high cost of fireclay, there’s a solution: Elkay composite sinks. The brand carries a variety of composite quartz sinks, each one offering its own unique design features. If you’re looking for an Elkay undermount sink that features a single bowl, check out the Quartz Classic ELGU2522GS0.

This model has everything you could ever want or need from a quartz sink. The undermount design looks flawlessly sleek by creating a seamless line from sink to counter. Just remember that under-mounting a sink is quite tricky, but even if you're not comfortable with it, this sink is still a great investment. Spending a bit of cash on professional installation is entirely worth it.

The ELGU2522GS0 comes in just one size, but the range of color options is impressive. No matter if you’re looking for a rich mocha or a more modest bisque, Elkay has got you covered in the color department. Whatever color you choose, you can count on this sink to be impact, heat, and scratch-resistant. And to top it all off, it’s easy to clean. According to Elkay Quartz Classic sink reviews, all you need to do to prevent stains is wash it clean with soapy water.

Let’s keep going with the Elkay quartz sink reviews by talking about another top-rated composite model, the Quartz Classic ELGU3322GS0. This sink is similar to the last in the sense that it is constructed from high-quality quartz material, and it features undermount installation. The main difference between this one and the last Elkay Quartz Classis is that the ELGU3322GS0 has two bowls instead of just one.

Double bowl sinks aren’t for everyone, but for others, they are a necessity. If you consider yourself the latter, it would be a mistake not to at least consider this Elkay model. In addition to having two basins equal in size, it's easy to clean, extremely resistant to stains, and comes in a variety of color options. The most popular color choice is Greystone, but feel free to go with something lighter.

Before pulling your credit card out and purchasing this on Amazon, there is one thing you need to know. Due to this sink’s large double-bowl design, it requires a lot of underside cabinet space - 36 inches to be exact. Even if you think you have enough space, it would be in your best interest to grab your measuring tape and take exact dimensions to confirm.

Once you’ve confirmed that you do indeed have three feet of available cabinet space, there is nothing else that should hold you back from choosing the ELGU3322GS0.

The main perk is the double-bowl design, which Elkay says allows users to “conveniently use bowls independently for washing, soaking, rinsing, drying and other household tasks.”

There are so many great features of the Quartz Classic collection, but so far, we have only covered sinks with undermount installation. So what if you’re for a Quartz Classic model with simple top mount installation instead? The solution is the ELG2522SD0 model. It has all the same great features that we've mentioned with the other Quartz Classic sinks; only this one can be easily installed as a DIY project.

The single-bowl design offers plenty of space for all of your kitchen tasks. Once you’ve accomplished those tasks, cleaning the sink is as simple as spraying the surface with water. As long as you do this after heavy-duty sink usage, you’ll never have to worry about stains settling on the quartz surface. And did we mention that it is heat safe up to 535 degrees Fahrenheit? This heat resistance applies to each of the Quartz Classic models we’ve covered on our list of Elkay sink reviews.

We highly recommend the Sand color option since it is warm, inviting, and does a good job of hiding kitchen unpleasantries. But if you’re looking for something different in terms of color, you have nine more options. The downside that goes along with each of the ELG2522SD0, as well as the other Quartz Classics, is that they don’t come with any additional sink accessories. If you feel you need add-ons like an Elkay bottom grid for sink protection, you’ll have to make a separate purchase.

In comparison to a kitchen sink, a bar sink is designed to be compact while also easing the dish-washing process of a home bar. We don’t all have the luxury of having our very own bar within the house, but for those us you who do, it would be wise to invest in an Elkay bar sink. The best of these is the D115151 Dayton model.

This compact stainless steel sink requires just 18 inches of cabinet space thanks to its 15” x 15” design. It is ADA compliant when properly installed, and proper installation is a simple task. The sink is designed for easy drop-in installation and comes with the compatible mounting clips. We suggest that you place the mounting clips inside the sink channel before getting started for an even easier install. Elkay provides you with steps and diagrams to walk you through the process.

You’ll be able to wash all your delicate barware without making a peep. The D115151 features sound-deadening pads that help to minimize vibration, therefore, cut down on sink noise. This is great for those late nights washing dishes after a get-together’ you won’t have to worry about waking up the kids.

There are three versions of the Elkay Dayton available, all designed with the same size, shape, and material, but each one features a different hole configuration for faucet installation. Elkay knows better than anyone that not all faucets, and even though many require just one hole, others need two or even 3 for installation. No matter the faucet you want for your new bar sink, Elkay ensures that you’re able to use it.

Elkay carries a long list of commercial-grade products, including Elkay commercial sinks. In fact, Elkay foodservice products can be found in commercial kitchen settings all over the world, like the company’s SS8236ROF2 model. If you’re looking for a traditional drop-in or undermount sink for your home kitchen, feel free to move on to the next Elkay sink review. This model is specifically geared towards commercial settings.

One feature that makes it ideal for a commercial kitchen is the freestanding design. There is no under-mounting or top-mounting needed for this sink, it just needs to be secured into place, and it is ready to use in your commercial kitchen. Another great feature is the sizeable double-bowl system that comes with an attached work station.

The main reason that this is more suitable for commercial kitchens, though, is the 14-gauge stainless steel construction. For residential stainless steel kitchen sinks, the gauge value of the steel is either 16 or 18. The lower the gauge, the thicker the steel, and the thicker the steel, the more durable it is. An 18-gauge sink is perfectly suitable for a residential kitchen.

But if you’re looking for something more heavy-duty that can withstand the tasks of a restaurant or catering setting, 14-gauge steel is the optimal choice. Because of its thicker steel, this sink is pricy, but that is to be expected for a commercial kitchen.

Although a triple bowl sink isn’t a necessity for everyone, the triple bowl design does have its perks. Having three basins means that you won’t be limited in any way on your household tasks. The Elkay CMR43223 triple bowl sink features three bowls - two larger basins framing a smaller center basin. It comes in 20-gauge stainless steel, which is not as ideal as 16 or 18-gauge, but it still gets the job done.

The drop-in installation is an added perk of this Elkay, except you should be aware that triple bowl installation requires more work than a single or double bowl sink. You’ll need three holes in your countertop, but as long as you have the proper cutting tool (like a jigsaw), this is no problem. Use the included sink template for help with cutting the holes with exact measurements. The trickiest part of all is accounting for three separate drain fittings, but an expert will know what to do.

Like most Elkay sinks, this one comes with sound-deadening pads along the underside to keep sink noise to a minimum. Each bowl features straight sidewalls so that the flat bottom is more useable for stacking, soaking, and washing dishes. Even with three bowls, you’ll have no trouble cleaning the CMR43223 thanks to the easy-to-wipe-down stainless steel.

A drainboard sink is something that is more common in commercial kitchen settings. It comes with an attached workstation (AKA a drainboard) to the right side of the basin that helps to maximize the workspace.  The best Elkay drainboard sink is the ILR4822L4 model that comes in a Lustertone satin finish. The attached drainboard is meant to elevate the culinary experience, and that is precisely what it does.

The ILR4822L4  is made from 18-gauge stainless steel and features two basins. Unlike the commercial Elkay we reviewed before, this one is not freestanding but instead features drop-in installation. No matter if this is meant for a commercial setting or you need a heavy-duty sink for the home, you’ll live the durability and functionality of this Elkay.

The company says that “an Elkay Lustertone Classic stainless steel sink looks as great on day 3,000 as it does on day one. The rich, uniform grain is scratch resistant for heavy-duty use, whether it's a kitchen sink or a prep, bar, laundry, or commercial sink. Light scratches, which occur with everyday use, naturally blend into the finish of this durable sink with time.”

So yes, your sink might scratch just like all stainless steel, but Elkay has designed it so that these scratches blend in with the Lustertone finish.

Not quite sure what you’re looking for in a sink, but know that you want a top of the range model? You might consider the Elkay EGUH2816R single bowl stainless steel kitchen sink. This model is top in its class for a few reasons, including its large basin size, seamless undermount design, and durable 18-gauge stainless steel construction.

Unlike some of the other Elkay sinks reviewed here, this one is completely geared towards residential use. It is meant to look good in a home’s kitchen, but that doesn’t mean it lacks in any way in terms of performance. It offers plenty of space for washing large pots and pans, and you never have to worry about making too much noise thanks to Elkay’s signature sound-dampening technology.

The one feature that some people don’t love is the offset drain placement, but on the other hand, some homeowners prefer an offset drain. The only downside to choosing a sink with an offset drain is that it is more challenging to install the drain fitting, specifically if you are replacing a sink with a center drain. This just means you might have to pay for professional installation, especially since this is also an undermount model.

Elkay Sink Materials Explained

  • Stainless Steel
Elkay stainless steel sinks are the main appeal of shopping here. The company places a significant focus on its stainless steel products, partly because that’s how the business got started in the first place. It’s an amazing material for constructing an eye-appealing, highly-durable sink for both residential and commercial kitchens. It doesn’t matter what your design preferences are if you know that stainless steel is the sink material for you, Elkay has one that will fit well into your kitchen. The company offers a variety of stainless steel options to choose from, ranging from bowl-shaped drop-in to large apron-front farmhouse.
  • Quartz
Elkay quartz sinks are blended from composite materials and are designed for extreme strength and durability. The company says that “they'll take on your toughest kitchen tasks and keep their stylish good looks. Elkay is America's No. 1 selling kitchen sink company with the largest offering of Quartz sinks.”Elkay offers 2 unique categories of quartz sinks, Quartz Classic and Quartz Luxe. The Classic sinks were designed to be strong and classicly beautiful, while the Luxe models are also strong but feature a more modern twist. Elkay Quartz Luxe sink reviews say that this collection features rich bold colors that are meant to make a statement.
  • Fireclay
In Elkay’s opinion, a fireclay sink has a timeless appeal. Not only is the design timeless, but the actual sink is expected to last through the decades. This is good news since fireclay is not a cheap material since it goes through a special heating process for added durability. Elkay fireclay sinks are the most expensive when compared to the company’s other sink materials.
  • CuVerro Antimicrobial Copper
Elkay has taken innovative measures to eliminate the spread of germs throughout the kitchen with their CuVerro antimicrobial copper sinks. The CuVerro collection is all manufactured with copper material that has been registered by the Environmental Protection Agency in the US to kill more than 99.99% of germs in just 2 hours or less. Not only is a CuVerro sink antimicrobial, but it is also extremely resistant to scratching and designed for heavy-duty use. It was also designed with noise reduction features to minimize vibrations, so no more loud clanking around while doing the dishes by hand.

Elkay Styles & Options

  • Single Bowl vs. Double Bowl vs. Triple Bowl
You’re probably already familiar with single and double bowl sinks for the kitchen, but have you heard of the triple bowl sink? Probably not since it is very uncommon for a sink to have three separate basins. Elkay is one of the only companies that offers several sink models that feature not one, not two, but three sink basins. Elkay customers love that they have this option since it’s not something that comes around often.
  • Undermount vs. Topmount
When browsing around online for Elkay sinks, you can shop based on your mounting preference. Elkay has made it easy for customers to view sinks based on whether they are mounted from beneath the countertop or dropped into place from above. The company has a variety of both installation types to choose from, no matter if you’re looking for stainless, composite, fireclay, or CuVerro copper.
  • Dual/Universal Mount
Universal mount is a term to describe a sink that can be mounted either above or below the countertop. This is also called dual-mount, and it’s a great solution if you’re unsure of which mounting style you’d prefer when you make your purchase. Although dual mount sinks are less common than sinks that are explicitly top or undermount, Elkay has no shortage of sinks that come with a universal mounting system.
  • Farmhouse
Remodeling the kitchen with a large farmhouse sink is a fantastic way to bring life back into the space. The farmhouse sink design is meant to resemble the traditional "country farmhouse" aesthetic, but this doesn’t mean that a farmhouse sink can’t look sleek and modern. Elkay has both types - classic and modern - so it’s easy to find an Elkay farmhouse sink to meet your exact needs and design preferences. Our full guide to farmhouse kitchen sinks can be found here.
  • Corner Sinks
Corner sinks are not offered by all sink manufactures, mainly because these aren’t as sought-after as the more conventional front-facing sink. But there are plenty of people out there in need of a corner sink, especially for those with a nontraditional countertop design. HomedIT says that a corner kitchen sink “can turn an unused corner into an active part of your kitchen. After all, it’s all about being practical. A great option for kitchens with dead corner spaces.”
  • Scullery Sinks
Similar to corner sinks, a scullery sink isn't something that many homeowners require. This type of sink caters to a select group of people, mainly someone with a scullery room in the home. You could say that a scullery is meant to take care of the overflow that comes from the kitchen or laundry room and is often referred to as a utility room.Since homes are no longer built with additional utility rooms aside from a laundry room, not many sink manufacturers offer scullery sinks. Elkay is one of the only companies that still do, so this is where you should turn if you need a scullery or utility sink.
  • Wall Hung Sinks
A sink that is mounted to the wall serves many purposes; it saves on floor space and can be installed at the exact height that suits you. Elkay offers 100+ wall-mounted models for the kitchen, lavatory, utility room, and laundry room. Many Elkay customers choose to invest in a small wall-mounted that can be installed at the ideal height for the shorter children of the family.

Comparison to Other Sink Brands

According to that same Consumer Reports myths and facts piece we referred to earlier, the quality of a sink isn’t always about the quality of the brand.

The manufacturer wasn't as important as the material. We tested big brands, including American Standard, Elkay, Franke, Kohler, and Moen,” says Consumer Reports.

Although it is not the most crucial factor in the buying process, considering the brand is still a must.

Compared to other manufacturers, Elkay offers the most variety. Prices are more or less similar to brands like Blanco and Kohler, but no other company has the same wide selection to choose from.

Installation of Different Mounting Styles

The steps involved in installing your new Elkay sink depend on the sink’s mounting style. There’s no doubt that an Elkay top mount or drop-in sink features the easiest installation method. If you’ve purchased or are soon to purchase a top mount sink, watch this video tutorial for the exact steps involved.

An under-mounted sink is a bit trickier since it requires the sink to be mounted from below the countertop surface. In terms of installation difficulty, there is nothing more challenging than installing a large farmhouse sink. These come with an exposed front, so customized cabinetry is often needed. For this, it’s best to leave it to the pros.

Cleaning & Maintaining Elkay Kitchen Sinks

As you read through Elkay composite sink reviews or opinions on the Elkay stainless steel collection, you’ll see that all Elkay products have something in common… they’re easy to clean! This is a feature that Elkay finds extremely important, which is why most of the sinks can be cleaned by simply spraying water and wiping down with a soft cloth.

The main thing to be aware of for Elkay sink maintenance is that not all cleaning products are created equal. For a stainless steel sink, use a stainless steel cleaner. For a composite quartz sink, use a product that does not contain high acidity levels or ammonia. Use the Elkay guide to sink care and cleaning to determine what products to avoid.

Elkay Sink Accessories

Every Elkay purchase comes with everything you’ll need to start using your sink (minus the faucet). This includes the sink itself as well as the necessary mounting hardware and installation guide. Not all Elkays require the traditional kitchen strainer, but if yours does, you'll also receive an Elkay sink strainer. Any other accessories, such as an Elkay sink grid or integrated cutting board, can be purchased on the Elkay sink accessories page.

People Also Ask (FAQs)

What is the history of the Elkay company?

Elkay is an American owned and operated company that has been family-run since 1920. It all started in Chicago by a father-son duo, Leopold and Louis Katz. Although the Katz family still owns it, Elkay has expanded internationally and employs people all over the world.

How to measure cabinet size vs. sink size?

Even if you assume you have enough space to accommodate that large Elkay farmhouse sink, you MUST take measurements. To do this, open up the doors to the cabinet that is beneath your current sink and clear out anything that might get in the way. Then with a measuring tape, measure the length and width of the space down to the last millimeter.

Where is the best place to buy Elkay sinks?

There’s no better place to buy anything than online, even if the product you’re looking for is a large, bulky, and heavy as a kitchen sink. Try not to shop for Elkay sinks at home depot, especially if you're trying to find the best price. Instead, start browsing Elkay products on Amazon.

What are the common problems one may encounter with Elkay sinks?

Just like any sink manufacturer, the most common issue with a new sink is rusting, particularly with stainless steel. It is a common misconception that stainless steel cannot rust, but this is not the case, especially when left in contact with other metal items for long periods.

Even if you do see rust forming on your stainless steel sink, Hunker says that it’s possible to remove it.

A simple paste made from baking soda is an excellent rust and spot remover for a stainless steel sink,” says Hunker. “It's also ideal for cleaning the sink any time, as this powder offers enough abrasive power to remove problem spots without harming the sink.

Conclusion

Out of all ten Elkay kitchen sinks we’ve covered on this list of Elkay sink reviews, we stand our ground and still say that the best one of all is the Lustertone ELUHF2520. Part of the reason for this is the medium-size farmhouse design, part of it is the shiny and sleek stainless steel material.

If you’re not looking for a farmhouse sink but prefer an easier-to-install model instead, consider the Elkay Quartz Classic ELG2522SD0.
